California regulates rent-to-own under California Karnette Rental-Purchase Act, and the rules are the same at every store in the state. Rent-to-own is a lease and not a loan, so there is no interest rate, and returning the item does not go on your credit.

Disclosure requirements Must disclose total number and amount of payments, total cost, cash price, whether the item is new or used, any additional mandatory charges, and the early purchase option.
Payment cap protections Total cost of ownership must not exceed 2.25 times the cash price (225% cap) for new merchandise.
Early buyout rights Consumer may purchase the property at any time by paying 50% of the remaining periodic payments, less any amounts already paid beyond the total cash price.
Repossession rules Must give at least 5 business days written notice before terminating the agreement. May not use force or threats. Consumer has the right to reinstate within 7 days.
