Rent-to-Own Mattresses: What to Know Before You Sign

You spend roughly a third of your life on your mattress. A good one improves your sleep, your energy, your mood, and your long-term health. A bad one — or no mattress at all — does the opposite. Yet quality mattresses commonly cost $800 to $2,000, putting them out of immediate reach for many families.

Rent-to-own makes quality sleep accessible. Here's what you need to know before signing a mattress RTO agreement, brought to you by VRTO (Virtual Rent To Own).

Types of Mattresses Available Through RTO

Most rent-to-own stores carry a range of mattress types. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right one for your sleep style and budget.

Type Feel Best For Price Range (Queen) Weekly RTO
Innerspring Traditional bounce, firm support Back sleepers, those who prefer a firmer feel $300 – $800 $10 – $20
Memory foam Contouring, pressure relief Side sleepers, joint pain, couples (less motion transfer) $400 – $1,200 $12 – $28
Hybrid Combination of bounce and contouring All sleep positions, those who want the "best of both" $600 – $1,500 $16 – $35
Pillow top Soft, plush surface layer Those who prefer a softer sleeping surface $500 – $1,200 $14 – $28

The Pre-Leased Question: Are Used Mattresses Safe?

This is the most common concern about renting mattresses, and it's a valid one. Here's the reality:

New mattresses are always available. Every major RTO store carries new mattresses, and you can always request one. There is no obligation to accept a pre-leased mattress.

Pre-leased mattresses are professionally cleaned. If a store offers pre-leased mattresses (at a discount), they are required to be sanitized, inspected, and in good condition. Reputable stores use commercial-grade cleaning processes including steam cleaning and antimicrobial treatment.

Our recommendation: If hygiene is a concern — and for mattresses, it's a completely reasonable one — simply request a new mattress. The weekly payment difference between new and pre-leased is typically just $3–$6, and the peace of mind is worth it.

Choosing the Right Size

Size Dimensions Best For
Twin 38" × 75" Children, single adults in small rooms
Twin XL 38" × 80" Taller individuals, college dorms
Full 54" × 75" Single adults who want more space, guest rooms
Queen 60" × 80" Couples, master bedrooms (most popular size)
King 76" × 80" Couples who want maximum space, large bedrooms
California King 72" × 84" Taller individuals, long and narrow bedrooms

Pro tip: Measure your bedroom before selecting a size. A king mattress needs a room that's at least 12 × 12 feet to allow for comfortable movement around the bed and other furniture.

What's Included in the Agreement

Mattress RTO agreements typically include:

  • The mattress itself (verify whether a box spring or foundation is included or separate)
  • Free delivery and setup — including removal of packaging
  • Warranty coverage during the rental period — if the mattress develops defects, the store is responsible for repair or replacement

Items usually not included:

  • Bed frame (often available as a separate rental or bundle)
  • Pillows and bedding
  • Mattress protector (though some stores include one with a new mattress)

Tips for Getting the Best Mattress Deal

  1. Bundle with a bed frame. Renting a mattress and frame together usually costs less per week than renting them separately.
  2. Ask about the comfort guarantee. Some RTO stores offer a 30-day comfort exchange — if you don't like the mattress, you can swap it for a different model at no extra cost.
  3. Test it in the store. Spend at least 10 minutes lying on the mattress in your typical sleep position. Don't feel rushed — this is a decision that affects your health every single night.
  4. Consider firmness carefully. Medium-firm works for most people, but side sleepers generally prefer softer mattresses and back/stomach sleepers prefer firmer options.
  5. Use the same-as-cash option. A $900 queen mattress paid off in 90 days costs $900. The same mattress over a full 18-month term could cost $1,800. The math speaks for itself.

When to Replace Your Mattress

Most mattresses should be replaced every 7 to 10 years. Signs it's time for a new one:

  • You wake up with aches or stiffness that goes away during the day
  • Visible sagging or lumps in the mattress surface
  • You sleep better in hotels or on other beds
  • Increased allergy symptoms (dust mites accumulate over time)
  • The mattress is over 8 years old

Don't sacrifice your sleep. Find a rent-to-own store near you through VRTO's directory and start sleeping better tonight.
