Why rent-to-own tires needed a map, and what we found building it

Try this. Open any search engine and type "rent to own tires near me." You will get a national network's locator, a chain's category page, an ad or two, and a lot of pages that explain what rent-to-own tires are without telling you where to get them. What you will not get is a list.

VRTO directory, October 9, 2026.

Not of every company that will put tires on your car this week and let you pay as you go, in your town, side by side.

That is the gap we set out to close, and as of October 9, 2026 vrto.com/tires-wheels lists 1,005 rent-to-own and lease-to-own tire and wheel locations in 40 states, from more than 100 companies. Here is how we built it and what surprised us.

Three kinds of company, one list

Rent-to-own tires are sold by three different kinds of business, and that is most of why there was no list.

The national networks are built for this: RNR Tire Express, RAW Wheels + Tires, and RimTyme sell tires and wheels on weekly payments and nothing else. Each has its own locator, and none lists the others.

The rent-to-own chains you know for furniture and appliances also carry tires in some or all of their stores. Whether a given store stocks them is a store-level question, so these companies list tires store by store, when they list them at all.

The independent tire shops are the hidden part. Hundreds of neighborhood shops have signed on with a leasing company so a customer with no credit can drive out on a new set and pay it off over months. The shop's sign says nothing about it. You find out at the counter, or you never find out.

We put all three on one page, with the company named, the address, the hours, and the store's public Google rating, and we say which kind of company each one is.

What we checked, and what we held out

For the networks and the independents, we did not take anyone's word for an address. We looked up each of 432 dealer locations at its street address on Google and listed it only when a Google Business Profile for that business sat at that address. Fifteen did not pass and are not shown: nine have no Google listing at the address we were given, three had an address that did not match, two are shown closed, and one turned out to be a second address for a store already on the list. We would rather show 417 locations we can stand behind than 432 we cannot.

For the chains, we audited each company's own website for a tire offer and listed the chain's stores from the same records the rest of VRTO uses. That is 588 of the 1,005. Tire selection at a chain store varies, so call before you drive.

Every listing shows the week we last refreshed it. We re-check the Google record weekly and the company's offer when we re-audit the company. The method, in full, is on How we collect data.

What surprised us

Missouri. Florida (89) and Texas (88) leading was no surprise. Missouri at 76, ahead of Ohio (73), Indiana (54), and Illinois (49), was. Rent-to-own tires are a Midwest business as much as a Sun Belt one.

Eleven states with five or fewer. Connecticut, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia have one listed location each. If you are a tire dealer in one of those states and you offer lease-to-own terms, you are the list.

The independents are everywhere the networks are not. About 70 independent shops fill in metros the networks skip. They are the hardest to find and the most useful to list.

Sheds, same problem

Backyard sheds and portable buildings are sold on weekly payments by builders and dealer lots that mostly have one or two locations each. Our sheds directory, live since July 28, now lists 836 locations in 48 states at vrto.com/sheds, every one matched to a Google Business Profile before listing. South Carolina leads with 78.

Before you sign

A rent-to-own or lease-to-own agreement lets an approved customer take the tires or the building now and pay on a set schedule, often weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. You own it after the last payment or an early purchase, or you can end the agreement by returning it; ask what you would lose. Some tire shops offer these terms through a separate leasing company, which is the company you sign with. Terms differ by company and by state, so ask every store the same questions:

  1. What is the total cost to own?
  2. How many payments, and how often?
  3. Is there an early purchase or same-as-cash window, and what exactly must be paid inside it, including fees?
  4. What happens after a missed payment?
  5. Tires: are mounting, balancing, and road hazard included? Sheds: delivery, setup, permits?

Write the answers down. VRTO is a directory, not a lessor; each company sets its own terms under its state's law.

If you rent tires or sheds, you belong on the record

If your store is listed, check your page: hours, address, logo. If it is missing, add it free at vrto.com/get-listed. A person reviews every submission, and listing never affects rank. Rankings are never for sale.
