There has never been a public count of where you can rent to own a set of tires in the United States. Each company knows its own stores. Nobody published the field. Now that VRTO lists 1,005 rent-to-own and lease-to-own tire locations from more than 100 companies, and 836 rent-to-own shed and portable-building locations, we can draw the map. Here is what it shows.
Tires: a Sun Belt business and a Midwest one

Florida (89) and Texas (88) lead, which anyone would have guessed. Missouri (76) in third was not guessed. Ohio (73), Indiana (54), Illinois (49), Louisiana (46), Wisconsin (40), Arkansas (37), and Michigan (36) round out the top ten. Rent-to-own tires are as much a Midwest and Mid-South business as a Sun Belt one.
The concentration is steep. The top five states hold 37.8% of all listed tire locations; the top ten hold 58.5%. Eleven states have five or fewer: Nevada and South Dakota (5), New Mexico and North Dakota (4), Idaho and Wyoming (2), and Connecticut, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia with one each.
Ten states have no listed rent-to-own tire location at all: Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Some of that is law (a few states regulate rental-purchase agreements in ways that keep national networks out), some is simply that nobody has opened one. If you run a tire shop in one of those states and offer lease-to-own terms, you would be the list.

Who the 1,005 are
Three kinds of company make up the count. The three national networks, RNR Tire Express, RAW Wheels + Tires, and RimTyme, account for about 350 locations. About 70 independent tire shops offer lease-to-own terms, most through a third-party leasing company. The remaining 588 are stores of rent-to-own chains whose own websites offer tires; selection at those stores varies, so call ahead.
Every network and independent location (417 in all) was matched to a Google Business Profile at its street address before it was listed; 15 that we checked did not pass and are held out. Chain locations come from VRTO's audit of each chain's website. The method is on How we collect data.

Sheds cluster in the Southeast. South Carolina leads with 78, then Tennessee (67), Florida (66), Georgia (65), North Carolina (61), Ohio (59), Virginia (52), and Texas (49). The top five hold 40.3% of shed locations, the top ten 65.9%. Only two states have none: Connecticut and Hawaii. Eighteen states have five or fewer.
Put the two maps side by side and only Florida, Ohio, and Texas sit in both top tens. The shed business follows the builders, who are concentrated in the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia. The tire business follows the networks and the rent-to-own chains, which are strongest in Texas, Florida, Missouri, and Ohio.
The files
Both state files are below as CSV: rent-to-own tire locations by state (40 rows, sums to 1,005) and rent-to-own shed locations by state (48 rows, sums to 836), as of October 9, 2026.
A location counts when it is active in the directory under an active company. Tire dealer and shed locations count only after a match to a Google Business Profile at that address. Chain tire locations are identified from each chain's own website. Cite as "VRTO Research, Where America rents to own tires and sheds, October 2026, vrto.com/research." License: CC BY 4.0. Corrections are logged on this page with the date and the change; there are none yet.
What is coming
This count is re-run monthly. The next cut adds shopper click-outs to store websites (a new bot filter went live October 9; the first clean week ends October 16) and, once the method is fixed, how often AI assistants open a VRTO page to answer a user's question.
